  1. Worth your money! 4 Star Review

Posted by on 28th Mar 2018

I'm really satisfied, especially for that price! Really fast, easy to travel with, I can run multiple adobe products at once without a problem! My only issue is battery life but it is not that much of a turn of. (last less that 2 hours at minimum luminosity and plane mode)
    No regrets whatsoever!

  2. Can't beat the price 4 Star Review

A competent (albeit a bit boring-looking) laptop, which can be had at a much better price as a refurb here, than as brand-new in other stores.

It comes with a large HDD, which can be swapped with a SSD, making the whole system much faster.

However, this upgrade is not for the weak of heart. Asus has decided to follow the whole "Ultrabook" philosophy, by making a machine that's hard to upgrade or modify.

Previous laptops had little compartments on the bottom, which could be opened, to access the memory or storage bays. Not here. You need to unscrew the whole bottom AND remove the keyboard (or at least prop it open) in order to upgrade to SSD. Definitely not an operation recommended for beginners.

What makes things even scarier is the apparent lack of finish and quality control exhibited by those who put the computer together. For instance, the power wires for the CPU fan are held in place with adhesive tape. When I opened my machine, I discovered that one of these tape ribbons was just about to come unstuck and potentially clog the fan - with disastrous consequences for the entire machine. Ironically, by opening the machine (and potentially voiding the warranty!), I might have saved it from a CPU meltdown later on.

And then, of course, there's the whole UEFI business.

In my particular situation, I changed the HDD with a SSD, and switched the operating system to Windows 7. Aside from the hair-raising experience of having to open everything up, I also had to permanently disable UEFI in BIOS, in order for Windows 7 to boot properly.

ASUS doesn't bother to state whether the laptop is compatible with Windows 7, but every necessary driver for Windows 7 is easily available on the Internet. You can even follow Youtube tutorials for opening it up and disabling UEFI.

Putting it back together after the upgrade, i was once again disappointed by little signs of carelesness exhibited by the manufacturer: The optical disc tray does not sit flush with the body. The keyboard tray is not perfectly plane.

Otherwise, the screen is good (and has a matte, not glossy finish, which is always a bonus). The AMD processor is on par with mobile i5 CPUs, and the Radeon video cores will allow you to even play some modern games - though not at the highest possible settings.

In the end, for what it does (and despite its design imperfections), you just can't beat the price.
