    1. Stopped working after 7 months

Posted by Unknown on 6th Aug 2015

Not sure if I had a lemon, but mine just conked out after 7 months of use and won't power on. It ran very hot, which may have been a reason. Glad I got the extended warranty.

    2. Getting an Asus router the 1st time, very satisfied.

Posted by Styx on 25th Dec 2014

First: Very quick delivery by NMicroVIP. Thank you.

      About the product: Asus RT-AC66U.
I have been using D-Link and Linksys routers in the past, with no complaints. This is the first time I picked up an Asus router, based on lots of user reviews on various sites. The interface for setting up the router is very different from what I used to, but it is still reasonably intuitive (with a few exceptions). I updated the firmware to the latest official Asus version (I also read a lot of good things about the modified Merlin firmwares), which worked well for both 2.4 and 5GHz band. I am also fortunate that there have been no drop signals. I understand that Asus has updated the firmware to limit the power output to meet the regulations. So, you may not get the same power as listed in the review that was done in 2012/2013. I only have the router for about 2 weeks, there are still so many features that I have not explore yet.

      Some other Pros:
Decent firmware support from vendor for a 2 year old router. As mentioned earlier, you will also find good Merlin firmware. (DDRWT, Tomato are also available).

Asus firmware does not allow you to enter the Computer ID associated with the MAC. (Merlin firmware addressed this oversight).
The HTTPS log into the router has its moment. So far, I am not able to get it to work, so I have to stick with HTTP log in.
Some of the set up are hidden, e.g. I had to search the web to find out where and how to locate the Primary and Secondary DNS entries.

I am pretty satisfied with the purchase. Especially after reading an article from SmallNetBuilder, I no longer see the reason to buy the latest and greatest routers, only to be the guinea pig to test out the firmwares. Refurbish router that is only a generation or so old is good enough.
